An LED or light emitting diode is a two lead semiconductor light source that is often small in area and can often be less than 1mm². These fantastic developments in technology have allowed for new video displays, text displays and sensors to be developed and their high switching rates have also been a useful device in the advance in communications technology. These types of lights are used in our traffic lights, automotive lighting, LED torch flashlights and many, many other devices and forms of equipment.
The phenomenon that is electroluminescence was first discovered in 1907 by a British experimenter by the name of H. J. Round who at the time worked for Marconi Labs. He made this discovery by using a crystal of silicon carbide and a cat’s whisker detector. It was Oleg Lusev of Russia who is reported to have created the first LED light bulb in 1927 and his research was then distributed throughout German, British and Russian science journals; however there was no use made of this incredible discovery for several decades thereafter. The first modern light emitting diode was produced in 1962. Commercially LEDs were firstly commonly used to replace incandescent and neon indicator lamps and they were also used in seven segment displays. In the early days of this technology they were only used in the more expensive equipment such as electronic test equipment and laboratory equipment, but were later used in appliances such as televisions, telephones, calculators, watches and radios. The cost of LEDs before 1968 was extremely high at around about two hundred US dollars per unit; it was because of this that there was not a great deal of practical uses for light emitting diodes. Later, LED lights became available in a large variety of different colours and were used in many appliances and equipment. Fairchild Optoelectronics developed an LED device that was sold for less than five cente each in the 1970’s and through the ingenuity of a team at Fairchild Optoelectronics led by Thomas Brandt, the cost reductions in LED light production was achieved and now you can purchase an LED torch flashlight and other such LED devices from as little as five dollars all the way to the more expensive brands that are well into the hundreds.
Thanks to these pioneers in the production of LED lighting we now have the convenience of the use of these lights every day. We see them daily as they are used in our traffic lights, warning displays on the side of the road, on buses, trains and ferries and even in our own home in our own LED torch flashlight.
